Filming in Wales

Permits, Permissions and regulations

All productions arriving in Wales from overseas should employ a UK location manager. You can use our crew database to find a location manager in Wales or alternatively visit the website of the Guild of Location Managers: www.golm.org.uk.

The Wales Screen Commission does not issue permits for filming in Wales; however you will need the permission of the location owner, who in most cases, will charge a location fee. It is normal for you to have a contract with the location owner (click here for a sample contract*). If you are intending to film or work in any public place you will be required to provide evidence of public liability insurance before any permission is granted.

If your production is of a significant size (anything more than a 3 person crew) and/or you are intending to film on the public highway, then you will also need to notify the Police (the Wales Screen Commission can provide relevant contacts in each region) and other emergency services.

You will also need the permission of the Police and obey control measures if you intend to use certain special effects, fake firearms, police uniforms, marked Police vehicles etc. Filming of scenes involving nudity, offensive language, etc. must be shielded from the public and where appropriate should be approved by the local authority and Police. There are regulations concerning the use of child actors (under the age of 15) and you will again need the agreement of the local authority.

Smoking is prohibited in all enclosed workplaces and public spaces in Wales and this includes film sets

All filming activities must comply with UK law.
