Politics

The Welsh Assembly Government is the devolved government for Wales formed in 1999. Led by the First Minister, it is responsible for many issues, including health, education, economic development, culture, the environment and transport.

The National Assembly for Wales, it's representative body, comprises 60 members (AMs), 40 of whom represent local constituencies and 20 of whom are elected by a method of proportional representation within five electoral regions.

There are four political parties within the National Assembly; Labour, Plaid Cymru (the party of Wales), Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. There are currently two independent Assembly members.

There are 22 unitary authorities (councils) in Wales with responsibility for local services.
